Are you looking for an alternative to harissa paste that you can quickly make by raiding your spice rack and adding a few store-cupboard ingredients? This harissa paste is a very quick recipe that doesn’t involve any chopping or using a food processor to make. You will need some measuring spoons and a grater for the garlic, but that is all the equipment (and washing up!) that is required. The basic recipe is very flavoursome, but not too hot, so you can add more chilli if you prefer.

An alternative Harissa Paste in a bowl with a spoon

This harissa paste can be used to add to meats, especially chicken and lamb, tofu, white fish and vegetables, before roasting or grilling. You can also use it as a marinade.

A more authentic harissa paste might contain roasted red peppers and dried whole chilies blended together with the spices. Often, when I use this paste, I am also roasting red pepper with the harissa paste at the same time, so it’s a way of cutting time in the cooking process.

Tips for making Alternative for Harissa Paste

  • Measure the oil olive using a tablespoon, and then use the same spoon to measure the tomato puree because it won’t stick to the spoon!
  • Squeeze the lemon through the back of the garlic grater to catch the pips and save on washing up.
